This organ is a typical English late romantic organ. There are three manuals and thirty stops and the Choir is enclosed. The key and stop actions are pneumatic.
Interestingly, the organ chamber houses the choir vestry at ground level with the pipework located in a loft above it.
Since the turn of the 21st century, the instrument has become increasingly unplayable. Eventually, a third of the organ was entirely non-functioning, with the remainder of it just about holding up.
Thankfully, in 2014, the long-awaited restoration work finally began. Due to funding issues, much of the restoration work and all tonal enhancements were eschewed. All the non-functioning pipework is being reinstated and some work is being done on the soundboards.
In accordance with the original plan, a new console is being installed in the hope that at a later date the specification may be enhanced.
