The organ in St Mary’s Cathedral, Killarney is a three-manual and pedal instrument originally built by William Telford & Son in 1869. The organ stands in a very favourable west-gallery location and takes advantage of the good acoustic of the building. It was reconstructed on two occasions since 1869, by Telford and Telford in 1938 and by the Irish Organ Company in 1973. This latter reconstruction saw the removal of the original casework and the organ divided either side of the lancet west windows. The Choir division was replaced by a neo-classic Positive, positioned in an exposed 'Holtkamp' style on a podium-case between the main divisions - a rather triste arrangement as this division is dwarfed by the dummy-length pipes of the main cases, the precise form Walter Holtkamp wished to eschew. The 1973 work is regrettable in its inattention to tonal balance and organ-building detail (the misnamed stop-tabs being visible examples of the overall approach) and is perhaps a cautionary example of organbuilding of the most ill-advised sort. Its mechanical condition is very poor.
