In 1856, Henry Bevington & Sons installed a 30 speaking stop instrument at Tuam Cathedral comprising 1500 pipes but it was ultimately ravaged by woodworm and removed in the 1930s. It was replaced in 1936 with an instrument from John Compton and although the console may look impressive with its 50 stops, they are derived from only 9 registers and 650 pipes. The organ had some work completed by the Irish Organ Company in 1999 when the gallery was extended and a new organ facade was completed. In 2017 Trevor Crowe was engaged to undertake work on the swell manual. This includes a new principal chorus, mixture and oboe, as well as revoicing the current pipework and will be completed by May 2018.
