Monkstown Parish Church is a large Church of Ireland building which dominates the centre of the village. Built on a steep slope, there is room for a large choir vestry and rehearsal space underneath the east end of the church (not to mention the extensive, mysterious catacombs recently restored for use as meeting rooms for the local A.A. group).
The organ was built by Gray & Davison in 1898 into a large chamber in the chancel. Unfortunately, there is no side-opening on the chamber and as a result the egress of sound is less effective than it could have been.
That said, it is a grand organ speaking into a resonant acoustic, and the distant effect created by the chamber almost adds to its cathedral-like sound. In 2009 the opportunity arose to restore the organ and the London firm of J.W. Walker & Sons Ltd was chosen to carry out the project. Some tonal modifications were made, such as the addition of a Pedal mixture and the transferring of an Open Diapason from the Great to the Choir. A comprehensive combination system was added and the key action was converted from pneumatic to mechanical, while the pedal became electric. The current specification boasts three manuals and an impressive 38 speaking stops, the largest organ in the suburban south Dublin area (as far as the writer is aware).
