T. W. Magahy (1883)

This organ was built for the Cork Exhibition 1883 and did well at showcasing Magahy's work. When the exhibition was over, it found a home in St Mary's Catholic Church in Drogheda. And what better place! The impressive organ can speak freely into the generous acoustic of the equally impressive building. Everything about the instrument is grand - from the massive timbers to the towering facade pipes, it was certainly built with impression in mind! One thing that struck me about this instrument is its versatility and wide tonal range, for an organ of the late 19th Century. Although everything seems original, some work was carried out by Kenneth Jones at some stage, which included some tonal revision. In place of the usual romantic abundance of 8 foots are mutations, reeds and full mixtures.
Also, the "Great Open Diapason" on the Pedal is not borrowed from the Great "Double Diapason" as the name might suggest, but it is a very large Open Wood, as the name actually suggests! The "Double Diapason" is in the facade, some of the pipes reaching 20' in length (but are cut down to speaking length at the back).

Sadly, the organ is in a very bad state at the moment. It's obvious that it has been largely neglected ever since it was installed. More recently, Derek Verso has been contracted to keep the organ "ticking over" until such time as a restoration is possible.
